What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write A Perfectly Good Fantasy?
I was so touched when readers of my first book, Midnight Calling: A Memoir of a Drug Smuggler’s Daughter, contacted me to say how happy they were that I survived and wondered how my life was today. Inspired by my readers, I picked up where Midnight Calling left off and wrote a sequel memoir.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of A Perfectly Good Fantasy, what would they be?
The song, “Lost Stars” is the perfect theme song for my book. That song has it all: youth being wasted on the young, one-night stands, Cupid demanding back his arrows.
What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I should say my favorite genre to read is memoir, since that’s what I write. And I do read lots of memoir, but that’s more like “work.” For pleasure, I read historical and literary fiction and some fantasy (magic realism).
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
Reasons to Stay Alive, Horse: A Novel, The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
My favorite scenes were those that took place in the wilderness (the real one, not the wilderness of love) because I wanted to capture not only the rugged beauty but the power and magic the wilderness holds. The Russian castle scene was fun, too.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
My latest addiction—I mean, writing motivation—is homemade beeswax candles with some yummy smelling essential oil. Can’t wait to get in my office each morning and light one up. Once in the office, I try to write at least 600 words every day. And I always reward myself with a piece of really good, dark chocolate.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
All we have is today. Don’t waste it.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
I hope readers will remember this from my books: never give up. On life. On love. On yourself. And no matter what, never ever give up on teenagers. Usually, they do come around.
