Interview with Ava Lock, Author of The Womanoid Diaries Complete Trilogy

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Womanoid Diaries Complete Trilogy?

Our hero, Cookie Rifkin, is the traditional woman my mother taught me to be. The villain, Maggie Rouser, is the militant feminist I became in college. Cookie is nothing without Maggie and vice versa. Their conflict came so naturally for me, that the books screamed to be written.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Womanoid Diaries Complete Trilogy, what would they be?

“Make me Feel” by Janelle Monáe.

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

My favorites to read have been satire, action/adventure, and techno-thrillers. I think that shows in this trilogy. I’m branching into magical realism and supernatural suspense now, though.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

“Circe” by Madeline Miller.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I loved writing all the fight scenes, but may favorite was Cookie taking down all the frogmen and an entire SWAT team on Tabitha’s yacht in “Beta Bots.”

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I used playlists to tap emotional depths of my characters. I also cast them all as crystals, then arrange their stones in scenes for choreography. Tarot cards get involved. It’s a “whole thing.” *gestures widely*

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Maybe not so much in words, but I have a huge “Om” symbol as my wallpaper on my laptop. That about sums it up.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Don’t take life so seriously, nobody gets out alive.
