Interview with B.R. Louis, Author of Space Holes: First Transmission

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Space Holes: First Transmission?

I’m a firm believer of: “if you don’t laugh, you cry.” With the way the world is now, I think everyone should be able to take a step back, look at all of this, and just laugh. Writing Space Holes was cathartic and I hope it provides much needed laughter to those who need it.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Space Holes: First Transmission, what would they be?

R.E.M. – It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine), seems most appropriate for this book and characters.

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I’m split probably 70% sci-fi and 30% fantasy for my most common reads. Though I’ll dabble in anything if it catches my interest.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I’m currently reading Shamans Of Heaven and Hell by my friend Chris Kim, and also reading Citizen Orlov by Jonathan Payne. On the TBR are the Oxygen Farmer and So You Had To Build A Time Machine.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

An unexpected character makes a grand entrance in a place he was never expected to be. The crew’s general lack of surprise or interest in the spectacle is my favorite kind of dry humor.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I leave notes in too many places. I have a document on cloud storage, one on my phone, sticky notes, and notebook—sometimes they all have moderately different timelines.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

“You’re an interesting species. An interesting mix. You’re capable of such beautiful dreams, and such horrible nightmares. You feel so lost, so cut off, so alone, only you’re not. See, in all our searching, the only thing we’ve found that makes the emptiness bearable, is each other.” ― Carl Sagan, Contact

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Choose laughter. It’s a much better way to live.
