Interview with Bonnie Traymore, Author of The Stepfamily
18 May 2023
What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Stepfamily?
We lived in Silicon Valley for eight years, and I wanted to do a domestic suspense thriller that also had some tech subplots to reflect the feel of the region. The main twist in the story was inspired by something that’s happened to people I know, but not with such dramatic consequences! I can’t say more without revealing too much.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Stepfamily, what would they be?
Family Affair by Sly and the Family Stone.
What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I love to read and write domestic and psychological thrillers. There’s something terrifying yet exciting about the fact that you might not know the people closest to you. Also, I teach as well as write, and in my history and government courses, we talk a lot about big topics, so I tend to want a break from the problems of the world in my downtime.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
I’m about to read Daniel Hurst’s book The Bride to Be, because he’s #1 today in Domestic Suspense New Releases and I’m #2. There’s always more to learn!
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
I really liked the biking scene in the Santa Cruz Half Ironman. My husband is a triathlete, and we had a lot of fun working through various scenarios with his team members over Christmas when we were in Silicon Valley! I also liked writing the climax scene, which I often write early on in the book.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I like to wake up early, around 3 a.m., and write when it’s dark out. We have a nice view from our living room, and I like the moonlit nights the best.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
Carpe diem.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
Families are complicated, but very important in life.
