Interview with Brenda Stanley, Author of The Still Small Voice
19 Dec 2023
What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Still Small Voice?
I love hearing that my story has made someone gasp at the end. This story definitely came from my experiences as a teenager. I grew up in the area my book is based and was raised in the culture. I saw this as a perfect backdrop to both a family drama and a murder mystery. The title is from a passage in the bible that those in the LDS church talk about often. The still, small voice is the holy ghost or your conscience. The story focuses on the power of shame and the use of that emotion to keep people in line with religious beliefs and teachings. I felt it represented the storyline perfectly.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Still Small Voice, what would they be?
Because of you by Kelly Clarkson. A lot of family angst!
What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I love mystery/thrillers, but I also love narrative non-fiction. They both fit into what I write.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
Too many to list. I often have two books going at the same time. I love to read and also listen to books, so I usually have one book in each format.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
The ending when it is all revealed and you realize what you’ve read isn’t what you assumed.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I have to have my dogs sleeping under my desk. I think they know this because they are always willing to accommodate me.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
Do it today, tomorrow is never guaranteed.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
Everyone has a story and we all face challenges in life. Don’t assume things about anyone.
