What can you tell us about your new release, Can You Hear It?
Can You Hear It is book one in my new series, Alpen Springs, and is a standalone. The story takes place in this small mountain city that I am so in love with, and not only that, I adore the main characters, Ashton and Averie as well as all the secondary characters. Their story is so emotionally, yet so sweet at the same time, that I basically just want to stay in their world, and Alpen Springs for so much longer.
What or who inspired you to become an author?
After reading Me Before You, by Jojo Moyes, Breakable by Tamara Webber, and It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover in a two-week time frame, I found my passion for reading and getting lost in a story again. That was when I had an ‘aha moment’ as I thought about all of the unfinished works I’d written over the years. That same week, I decided to finish writing Keeping Her Close, the first novel I wrote to its completion. So essentially, I’ve always enjoyed writing for myself as a way to escape, but it wasn’t until I read those books that I began to really think about becoming an author.
What’s on your top 5 list for the best books you’ve ever read?
Me Before You by Jojo Moyes, Breakable by Tamara Webber, It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover, The Duchess Deal by Tessa Dare, The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Malcolm X.
Say you’re the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?
Nora Roberts. What is your writing process?
What’s your favorite thing about writing?
The escape out of myself and into a world where the characters are in total control. Since I’m not much of a plotter, I feel like I’m experiencing the journey with the characters from a readers standpoint even as I write. Eighty percent of the time, I have no idea what the characters are going to throw at me next, and it’s so exciting, I love it!
What is a typical day like for you?
I wake up at 5:45 a.m. and lie in bed for an hour because for some reason I can’t stop waking up that early, which is crazy because I’m not a morning person. So, still tired and sleepy, I just lie in bed and scroll through social media on my phone. After that, I go to work and after 8 hours of data entry and possibly locking eyes with the handsome fellow a few cubicles over, I’m back home. Then depending on how tired I am, I try to get some writing done, but usually, I’m exhausted to the point I’m in bed with my laptop by 8:00 p.m. until I call it a night around 10:30.
What scene in Can You Hear It was your favorite to write?
My favorite scene to write in Can You Hear It was when Ashton ran into Averie at a house party. That was their first real interaction with each other since it lasted more than a minute, so it was fun to see and experience their chemistry as it leaped off the pages.
Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?
To focus on the here and now and to take things one day at a time.
