Interview with Cassandra Finnerty, author of Princess of Sky, Earth, Fire and Water
04 Feb 2019
What can you tell us about your new release, Princess of Sky, Earth, Fire and Water?
The story begins on the windswept coast of western Ireland, when a young woman inherits magical powers. To keep these gifts, she must embark on a quest to the mystical East Kingdom, where she meets a warrior prince. During her journey, she battles with herself, men, nature, magic – and ultimately, love.
What or who inspired you to become an author?
My mother inspired a passion for reading. I’ve always wanted to channel this love into writing stories.
What’s on your top 5 list for the best books you’ve ever read?
The Wizard of Oz, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe are all favorites. For children’s stories, Guess How Much I Love You is at the top of the list. I also like Little Women.
Say you’re the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?
I’d love to go back in time and have a conversation with authors like the Bronte sisters, Jane Austin or Beatrix Potter. What was it like for them, living in a different age?
What’s your favorite thing about writing?
Creating magical settings – transporting readers to enchanting and mysterious places.
What is a typical day like for you?
I usually start my day before 6:00AM. The house is quiet and it’s a great time to write. Once my child is off to school, I spend as much time as possible writing before going to work. I’ll try to write something every day — even if it’s a paragraph or two.
What scene in Princess of Sky, Earth, Fire and Water was your favorite to write?
There are two, really. The first was Aisling’s encounter with the Fifth Prince on the cliffs, in the dark of night. The second was the confrontation between the prince and his step-mother, Queen Vila, where she tells him she’ll do everything in her power to sabotage his happiness.
Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?
I believe in the ‘glass is always half full’ philosophy. Believe in yourself. Always have a dream and create a path for achieving it. When you encounter barriers along the way, try and figure out a way around them. Thanks for your interest in the Princess of Nature Series.
