Interview with Celia Aaron, author of The Maiden

What can you tell us about your new release, The Maiden?

The Maiden is a particularly dark romance that takes place in a cult. I researched various old school and modern day cults to craft the world of Heavenly Ministries, which is light and bright on the outside but rotten and gloomy at its core. The primary romance is as unlikely as it is hot, and the hero–as always–will be forced to fight for his redemption.

What’s on your top 5 list for the best books you’ve ever read?

My top books change, depending on recency, to be honest. But I’d say the Harry Potter books are always a fave, I am Legend by Matheson, The Gate to Women’s Country by Tepper, Handmaid’s Tale by Atwood, and To Kill a Mockingbird is a forever favorite.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I’ve always been a writer. I just haven’t always been good at it. Mr. Aaron is likely the reason for my current career, because he encouraged me to keep going and keep getting better.

Who is your favorite couple from literature?

Liz and Darcy, naturally.

What is a typical day like for you?

I have a 7-year-old and a 5-year-old, so the early morning is a get-to-school blur. Then I drink a lot of coffee, do some general faffing, and write. I do my best work at night, once my darling/jerk girls are in bed.

What makes your world go round? Why does it bring you joy?

My family. Everything I do is for them.

What scene in The Maiden was your favorite to write?

The very first one. It sort of felt like throwing myself out into the open air, no net, and only a faint map of where I was going.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Fortune favors the bold.
