What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Summoner’s Circle?
After reading so many sprawling paranormal worlds with main characters like police officers and detectives and such, I really just wanted to write one where the protagonist was just like me. Just a regular kid doing her regular stuff, when the magic of the world becomes obvious and changes her whole life.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Summoner’s Circle, what would they be?
Not Strong Enough by boygenius. Although that might just be because that song is my current obsession and no matter what you asked me I would answer that. But I do really think it applies to Dari in a lot of ways. She’s perpetually trying to figure out why everyone thinks she can do things she’s never done.
What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
Urban Fantasy or Paranormal is my favorite. Guilty as charged. 100% the same as what my favorite is to write.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
Gosh, my TBR pile is so huge I think my house is going to collapse under its weight sometimes. But in no particular order here’s the top: Legacy of the Demon by Diana Rowland. Rune Awakenings by Genevra Black. Magic Dark, Magic Divine by A.J. Locke. Kiss of the Blood Prince by Alessa Thorn.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
I think this is the same for all my books. The climactic battle/conflict/encounter. Whenever I’m writing I know that’s what I’m building to and it always ends up being my favorite scene.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
Hmm. I don’t think so. I guess if you consider compulsively drinking coffee while writing a quirk then that would be it.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
Oooh. I have a lot of favorite quotes, but there’s one from Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler that I come back to a lot: “All that you touch you Change. All that you Change Changes you. The only lasting truth is Change.”
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
Looping back into the quote question a bit, that change is where you grow. Dari resists all the changes going on in her life for the whole book, but without those changes there’s no book, right? She doesn’t enjoy being the protagonist very much, but if I could tell her just one thing it would be that it’s all going to work out.
