Interview with David Boito, Author of Bee Conspiracy
24 Aug 2023
What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Bee Conspiracy?
I have always appreciated bees. I always felt it was unjust for certain media outlets to use loaded terms like “killer bees” in sensationalized stories. Recent reports of increasing honeybee “colony collapse disorder” are a cause for concern. I decided to write this story in order to get across the idea that bees need not be feared, they must be preserved as they have an important role in the ecosystem.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Bee Conspiracy, what would they be?
I think Kelso’s theme song might be “Flight of the Bumblebee,” and Duke’s might be “Fireflies,” by Owl City.
What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I prefer thrillers or historical adventures. I do gravitate towards the thriller as a genre to write.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
I am reading “Falling,” by TJ Newman. A thriller! Surprise surprise.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
I really enjoyed writing the scene at the El Segundo Blue butterfly sanctuary near the end of the LAX runway. This is an actual place and I had a good time going there to research.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
My dog is frequently in the office while I write…this is not a necessity but she’s good for moral support during moments of frustration!
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
I am quite partial to this quote by one of my favorite writers, Frank McCourt: “Your mind is a treasure house that you should stock well and it’s the one part of you the world can’t interfere with.”
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
I would hope they might find a new appreciation for at least some members of the insect world and not always approach bugs from a place of fear or disgust.
