Interview with Deborah Hawkins, Author of Unforgettable

14 Nov 2023

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Unforgettable?

As an attorney, I am very much aware of the role the expert testimony plays in a trial. Early on, Raven Adair casts doubt on the soundness of expert testimony when she says that she knows people are wrongly convicted in slip and fall cases based on expert testimony. The idea of this book came to me after I watched “The Staircase” about the death of Michael Peterson’s wife in North Carolina and the controversy of whether it was a homicide or an accident. I was also intrigued by the theme of infidelity, although I found it much harder to write about than I anticipated. Finally, I studied Irish literature when I was getting my Masters in English, and I wanted to bring in some Irish characters to go back to a long-time interest in Ireland and its history.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Unforgettable, what would they be?

Unforgettable sung by Nat King Cole and As Time Goes By (theme from Casablanca).

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Mystery and suspense!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I’m afraid everything TBR is work related (sigh).

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I like writing the trial scenes in the courtroom in all of my books.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Not really.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

My word is my bond.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

The emotions they felt.
