Interview with Diane E. Samson, Author of Shadow of Death

07 Dec 2022

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Shadow of Death?

Shadow of Death is a companion novel to the Gems of Fire series. It’s the backstory of Jack, who is Anna’s love interest. When writing the other books, I kept extensive notes for Jack’s character, and I decided that the story of his life before he met Anna needed to be told. It brings greater depth and richness to the overall series and helps the reader understand his motivations and heart-wrenching decisions later. I fell in love with him all over again!

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Shadow of Death, what would they be?

Jack: Memories by Maroon 5; Meisha: Breakfast by Dove Cameron; Zor: Better by Khalid; Majstor: Cold as Ice by Foreigner

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

My favorite genre to read is definitely what I write, Young Adult or New Adult fantasy, but I also read historical novels, including historical romance.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Oh wow. You would ask! I have so so many. Top of mind are The Stolen Kingdom by Bethany Atazadeh and Bow Before the Elf Queen. I also need to catch up on a ton of Elise Kova’s books!

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Definitely the scene with Lucia at the ball in Puledor. Jack hates dancing so I love to force him into it as much as possible!

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I’m not sure if this is a quirky habit, but I tend to daydream about certain scenes before I write them. Sometimes I can keep a scene in mind for months, which is probably a little strange!

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I’m a Christian and Proverbs 3:5-6 is an essential philosophy for me. If you trust in the Lord with all your heart, He’ll make your paths straight. Easier said than done!

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

In the acknowledgements I write: “His (Jack’s) story reminds me too that no matter how deep the valley or how dark the night, if we are open to the possibility, there is always light and hope. Seek and you will find.” Jack’s story is darker than the rest, but hope is not far away.
