What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Author?
I was inspired to think about the “big ideas” and themes of life – good, evil, time, space, sin, redemption, choice, destiny – all of them ideas which are “Biblical” in some sense.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Author, what would they be?
The theme song for Ezekiel Gates would be “As This Moment Slips Away,” by The Bad Plus (jazz).
What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I read plenty of non-fiction, but when it comes to fiction, I like intelligent, imaginative stories, ideally about the “big ideas” – so yes!
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
Harry Potter (for the Nth time!), Three Philosophies of Life by Peter Kreeft, A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
Probably the “time-inversion” scene at the Metropolitan Museum in Chapter 11.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I think better standing up, so I like to type with my laptop on a cardboard box on a table!
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
It’s hard to choose just one, but the 23rd Psalm is often in my mind, especially during difficult times.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
That the mind and the universe are massive, strange, and awe-inspiring, like their maker.
