What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write If At First You Don’t Deceive?
I wanted to write a thriller where the main character finds a hiding place on a remote island. I like the gothic feel of a remote island and I hope I captured that ambience in the book.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of If At First You Don’t Deceive, what would they be?
My main character Everly Sutton’s theme song would be Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird”.
What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I love romance and mystery, and a combo of both is my favorite.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
I’m currently reading “Murder at an Irish Wedding” by Carlene O’Connor. I just finished Jane Harper’s “Dry” and loved it from start to finish.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
When the main character, Everly Sutton, lands on Winborne Island for the first time and she finds this new sense of freedom… at least for a short while.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I have a small outside office and I always have at least one dog with me. The dogs consider it their office, too. It might be the bowl of dog treats I keep near the computer.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
Always be kind to people, animals, and the planet.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
Mostly I want my books to provide a nice escape from life. And if they think about the characters long after the final chapter, then that’s a bonus.
