What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Bones Buried Deep (Dr. Benjamin Bones Mysteries #4)?
This book was written by popular demand. A few years ago, I left the series hanging due to personal and professional changes. After a few years, I wondered if I shouldn’t move on to new projects. But so many readers emailed me, commented on my website, and reached out on Facebook asking for another book, so here it is. I’m glad I wrote it. It’s wonderful to be back with Ben and Lady Juliet.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Bones Buried Deep (Dr. Benjamin Bones Mysteries #4), what would they be?
Because this book is set in 1940, I’d say both Ben and Juliet get “Cheek to Cheek” as sung by Fred Astaire. It’s even mentioned in the book.
What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
Mystery is of course my favorite, but I read just about everything. From hard sci-fi to magical fantasy to topical nonfiction, I just love to read.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
Stranger Times by C.K. McConnell; Ladies’ Bane by Patricia Wentworth; Phantom Evil by Heather Graham; The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
When Lady Juliet gets into costume, follows some criminals to a black market swap, and decides to collar them herself. I also had fun writing Ben’s reaction to it.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I need peace and quiet so I go into my writing cave, put in my earbuds, and listen to Brain FM while I work. Every 30 minutes I make myself get up and do something physical–take out the garbage, water the plants, etc. Otherwise, I’d be sitting an awful lot!
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
Better late than never. I didn’t publish my first book until I was forty-two.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
All the historical details are accurate in Bones Buried Deep. Brits on the homefront really did all the things I write about, and much more, during the Second World War.
