Interview with J. Traveler Pelton, Author of The Falconcrest Chronicles

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Falconcrest Chronicles?

My grandson wrote the first book in this setback when he was completing his home school requirements; no, all home schools do not require the participants write an entire book before they graduate, but when your grandma is an author and your grandpa has written a book and your aunt has written three books… Anyway, he wanted to do it in place of a dissertation and I allowed it. It took us several months to complete, rewrite, edit, polish, and prep.

He was completely surprised when it was published before graduation, and horrified when his ex-girlfriend’s father wrote a scathing review on how terrible the book was. He found out who write the review when the creep called and gloated about it. Yes, that review is still on Amazon. At any rate, the next three became his daydreams of where it ought to go and my writing them, since he was now involved in college, first jobs, and getting independent. He would talk out a plot idea, we’d jam over it, and I’d get the writing done.

All four books are in this volume. You’re going to love them.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Falconcrest Chronicles, what would they be?

If I saw this as being cast for a movie, I think I’d use the following music:

Let’s see, for Lucan, something along the lines of Running with the Wolves and for his wife Wind Beneath My Wings. For the intro to the movie, something from Aaron Copeland crossed with medieval celtic. For the dragon, Puff the Magic Dragon, I don’t know… We’ve got to have the 1812 overture in there somewhere-maybe in the battle scenes?

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love almost anything that isn’t erotic, trashy or too violent; in short clean. Although, some of my early cozy mysteries had some crazy stuff in them. I leave people outside the bedroom door, so to speak and outside the wars.

As for what I write, cozy mysteries, historical fiction, fantasy, spiritual books and Sci-fi.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Oh my goodness, I have a stack of them. Most of them are mysteries.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I think the birth scene in the floating bubble was rewarding to think up. I like the scene where Lucas makes friends with the dragon.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I have to get up and stretch every 45 minutes or I get writer’s block – seriously. I have to move and think out scenes.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I try to help the hurt and loneliness in your heart by taking you away for a little while. There is SO much pain in this world.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Good wins. Love is eternal. Don’t be afraid to make friends with someone different, you may discover a gem.
