Interview with JB Michaels, author of The Viking Throne
26 Nov 2018
What can you tell us about your new release, The Viking Throne?
The Viking Throne is a visceral, pulse-pounding, slam-bang action thriller! It is a dystopian sea-faring adventure that is part of a larger collection of books labeled the Cursed Seas collection. The book has it all. A lot of heart, great characters, incredible action. I had a blast writing it. Think Liam Neeson’s film ‘Taken’ but underwater with pirates and monsters.
What or who inspired you to become an author?
The most important influences on a personal level were my Grandfather and Mother. They were catalysts for me to pursue my dreams. Their indomitable spirits helped me do what I am doing now. On a more worldly level, another huge influence is Walt Disney, I actually got mad at myself for being in one of his theme parks and constantly living in other people’s imaginations! It was in that moment that I decided I would start to write my own stories! He also just had an incredible drive and never ever gave up in addition to being a prolific storyteller.
What’s on your top 5 list for the best books you’ve ever read?
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton, Walt Disney: The Triumph of the American Imagination by Neal Gabler, Guns Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond, The Chris Farley Show by Tom Farley Jr and Tanner Colby also STAR WARS BOOKS!
Say you’re the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?
I would interview Michael Crichton! I would ask him what his next story would have been and where he finds inspiration! Also, would ask if he had a specific process in how he balances his educational storytelling with his captivating plot beats! He was the master at both.
What’s your favorite thing about writing?
I love the plot development aspect the most! The brainstorming sessions with my journal and pencil! Love it! Inspiration does strike anywhere! Also, in the act of writing the story sometimes you get completely lost and enveloped in a scene, while writing The Viking Throne this happened A LOT. I had such a blast writing this story. It was so much FUN!
What is a typical day like for you?
Typical day for me is spend time with my family, my wonderful wife and son! My boy is 3 years old and his mind is sparking in so many amazing and hilarious ways. Then I set to work and write in chunks of time. Sometimes that writing time is spent at home or away at a local bookseller. Coffee plays a major role! In fact, coffee is a writer’s tool. Use it. Alot.
What scene in The Viking Throne was your favorite to write?
My favorite scene to write in The Viking Throne involves a pirate ship, a giant sperm whale, and C4 explosives. I can’t tell you more, it would spoil the fun.
Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?
Always Believe in Yourself and Your Dreams!
