What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Magic Hidden, Magic Found?
Readers often say that my books are where reality and what we wish for intersect. Juliette’s story is no different. Since Covid and before, chronic anxiety is something a shocking number of women deal with on a daily basis. Yet, it’s so rare to read stories with anxious heroines. I believe that representation matters and that it can only be helpful for women to read stories about people like them who manage great and small things despite self-doubt, fear, and everything else anxiety brings with it.
I was a child who escaped into books as often as feasibly possible (and a few times when it shouldn’t have been feasible, too)! I am a grown-up who still uses books as a way to dissociate from life. Most of us don’t ever get to live the bookish adventures we read about. I thought it was time to allow one of us to get that chance. Even though, in the end, she is herself a bookish heroine.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Magic Hidden, Magic Found, what would they be?
Colbie Caillat – Try
What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I have broad reading tastes, but I’m definitely partial to Magical Realism, Cozy Paranormal fiction, and anything Fantasy related.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
It might be easier to say what isn’t! I have a lot of Paranormal Women’s Fiction stories to catch up on.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
Without a doubt the one where Juliette’s surprise rescue creates utter havoc in her kitchen.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I find it hard to start writing without a mug of hot tea or coffee and if Axl, our cat, isn’t in his basket in the corner of my office. It’s like he’s my supervisor.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
These days, I live by 3 life mottos:
1) In a year, you’ll wish you had started today.
2) Laura Ingalls Wilder was published at 65. Harland Sanders founded KFC at 62. Julia Child learned to cook at 50. There is no age limit for finding your life purpose.
3) I will never stop reaching back to help others achieve what I am achieving. Indie authors as a whole do better when indie authors as a whole do better.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
I want readers to put down my books and feel like they’ve just spent time with their best friends enjoying a great cup of coffee and a chat. We are all so lonely and isolated these days. I want my readers to feel a little more connected and a little less alone.
