Interview with Jim Diggins, Author of Anubis: The Weigher of Souls
31 May 2022
What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Anubis: The Weigher of Souls?
While we were watching a dog twitch and whimper while dreaming, a friend remarked that finding out what dogs dream about would make a great book. So I ran with the idea. Someone had to!
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Anubis: The Weigher of Souls, what would they be?
For Isaac: “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” (by Nina Simone, recorded most notably by The Animals).
What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I like anything with a fast pace and a clever twist, especially books with a paranormal or supernatural motif. I adore Tolkien. But I also appreciate serious literature. I work in the field of non-fiction books every day so it is nice to escape into other worlds.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
I would like to read more Garcia Marquez, Kafka, Eco… there is a treasure trove of 20th Century literature that I have only scratched the surface of.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
The dream scenes were fun to write. Some of them are based very closely on actual dreams I have had. It is such a challenge to realistically portray dreams in printed word or on film; nobody truly does it justice.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
John Grisham once said “write at least one page every day” even if you just aren’t into it. It’s not exactly quirky or a habit, but it is great advice for actually finishing that book you want to write but keep putting off.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
Take the red pill.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
This book is not anti-religion or anti-science. It is anti-dogma. But pro-dog!
