Interview with Juliana Haygert, Author of The Demon Kiss
17 Jun 2019
What can you tell us about your new release, The Demon Kiss?
The Demon Kiss is a fun, action-packed book about a girl who ends up at an academy for demon hunters. It is set in the Rite World universe, where some other books of mine are also set, but this series can be read by itself. It was a little different than my other books and very exciting to write it. I’m already half-way through writing book 3 and I love seeing where this story is going. I hope my readers like it just as much as I do! 🙂
What or who inspired you to become an author?
I started writing when I was 13yo after my Portuguese teacher had assigned the class to write a short novella. I was already an avid reader because of my mother, so I loved books and stories. I wrote that novella really fast, and started another right away. And then another … and another. I never really stopped writing, but I also never considered actually publishing anything until around 2010 or so.
What’s on your top 5 list for the best books you’ve ever read?
Does the Harry Potter series count as one? lol So that is one. The A Court of Thorn and Roses series by Sarah J. Maas is another one. The Ramses series by Christian Jacq is one I read very young and I still think about it often. Also the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan. And last but not least, the Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini. I know I cheated there by picking series instead of single books, but this is better. 5 books is too little 😉
Say you’re the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?
J.K. Rowling. I would ask her if I could take her brain for myself LOL But seriously, I honestly don’t know what I would ask her. I just wanted to sit by her side and bask in her awesomeness. Besides a great writer, she’s a great human being, and that makes her practically perfect.
What’s your favorite thing about writing?
Being immersed in a new, different world, with magic and all kinds of possibility. You can make up anything, be anyone. It’s awesome.
What is a typical day like for you?
I wake up at 6am, go to my office, check all business stuff (emails, FB messages, ads, etc). Then the kids wake up and I get them ready for school (though it’s summer now and they sleep in a little). I drop them off, then come back home to write. I also workout before picking them up from school. Then once they are home, I don’t write anymore. I might check emails and/or ads, but I don’t “work” anymore. I’m theirs then. The husband soon gets home, and we have family dinner all together. That’s it. Pretty boring, but I like it.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?
“Treat others as you want to be treated” … simple like that 😉
