What can you tell us about your new release, Back Check?
Back Check is book 4 in my Aces Hockey series. It’s a second-chance romance, which can sometimes be tricky. For me, what makes a second chance story work is what drove the couple apart the first time—if it’s something trivial or immature, I’m not as invested in the couple making it work the second time around. But I think there were pretty compelling reasons for why Tanner and Katelyn didn’t make it when they were first together, and even though they tried to find love with other people, they were meant to be together, and now they’re in the time and place they’re supposed to be.
Name a book that you feel has impacted your life significantly. Why was it so impactful?
Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery. I was just a child when I read it for the first time, but I loved, loved, loved Anne. That’s definitely one of the first books that started my love of reading, and I also think it was the start of me loving romance…I so wanted Anne and Gilbert Blythe to be together! That kept me reading all the other Anne books.
You’re hosting a literary dinner party. Which three writers are invited?
I would invite my author friends PG Forte, Kinsey Holley and Viv Arend because they are awesome. Is that cheating? If it must be authors I haven’t met, I would invite JK Rowling because she’s so inspirational; Marian Keyes, who has to be hilarious; and Kristen Ashley because I think she would be fun to have a cocktail with.
Pretend you qualified for the Olympics. What sport would you compete in?
Oh I would definitely be a figure skater! (I’d say hockey, but that’s just too far-fetched, LOL). I love figure skating, it’s such a great combination of athleticism and artistry. I wouldn’t be a pairs skater though, because those girls are CRAZY letting their partner toss them up in the air and throw them across the ice.
If you could invent anything, what would it be?
Time machine. I want one so bad. That comes from being impatient. I want to be where I need to be instantly!
What TV show have you binge watched?
House of Cards, Scandal and Suits most recently!
What scene in Back Check was your favorite to write?
I loved writing the scene where Tanner comes to realize he screwed up and has to make things right with Katelyn. It was fun writing the crazy conversation his teammates are having while they’re sitting in a Nashville bar and Tanner is getting drunk, and I loved how his buddies look after him and guide him through what he needs to do—bare his soul and make himself vulnerable by asking the woman he loves to go with him if he gets traded—when the last time he asked her, she turned him down.
Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?
This one expresses what I’ve always believed. Bad things happen to all of us, and it’s how you deal with it that’s important:
“The same boiling water that softens the potato hardens the egg. It’s about what you’re made of, not the circumstances.”
