What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Uglier?
Uglier is a sequel to Ugly, which is a thinly disguised autobiographical story, where I imagine what it would be like if I were a teenager now, with all the available information about gender identity possibilities (very different when I was a teen).
What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
YA contemporary and yes!
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
Good Girl Bad Blood by Holly Jackson; Firefly graphic novels; What We Left Behind by Robin Talley; and the Heartstopper series.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
There’s a scene where my character watches the stars with her crush. It’s a brand new experience for Nic and it’s sweet.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
Not really very quirky, but I do almost all of my writing at Starbucks or restaurants because I’m easily distracted at home.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
I’m an 80s kid so it’s “wax on, wax off,” which to me means you have to put the work in but it will pay off.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
Everyone has the right to be who they are.
