What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Ugliest?
LGBTQ rights are under threat and teens have more power than they realize to fight for what’s right when they band together.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Ugliest, what would they be?
“Best Friend” by Sofi Tukker; “Battle Cry” by Angel Haze ft. Sia; “Firestarter” by The Prodigy; “Born This Way” by Lady Gaga; “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor.
What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
YA contemporary; yes!
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
The Project by Courtney Summers, and the Heartstopper series.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
The walkout.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I spend a lot of my writing time in Starbucks, earbuds in, getting energy from the people around me without having to listen to them.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
I believe in the 10,000 hours rule–if you want to get good at something, you have to practice and practice it.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
I hope readers can take away just how important it is to fight fascism, anti-trans and other anti-LGBTQ efforts.
