What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Scaretastic and Sci-fi Stories?
This is a set of speculative gems that were begging to be written – so I listened to those voices in my head and wrote them down.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Scaretastic and Sci-fi Stories, what would they be?
Livin’ on the Edge – Aerosmith.
What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
My favorite genres are science fiction, coming of age stories (YA, baby!) and psychological horror and suspense. I read family dramas and memoirs too, because they tend to give me different perspectives and insights into life. Elements of all these genres infuse into my characters and stories that I write.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
I recently finished Mexican Gothic, by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and I love her dark creepy prose, her spunky, smart protagonist and her fusing of cultures. I’m currently reading Dead Silence, by S.A.Barnes, Happy Place, by Emily Henry, and Lessons in Chemistry, by Bonnie Garmus. It’s summer. I want to lighten up my dark and gloomy list a little!
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
Since this is a short story collection, I can say that each derived from something that had a positive impact. Each story in Scaretastic and Sci-fi Stories is followed by an author note explaining why it was written, the inspiration behind the story, and feedback from other readers, including how some of these stories became New York Midnight writing contest winners.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I swore I would never, ever, ever, use a Mac. (Had a traumatic experience as a kid. *wink*) But I have adapted to the one I switched to a year ago. I especially like the share screen mode and will often project my work on a large TV screen as I write and edit.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
Come for the heart-felt horror, stay for the frightful fun.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
To have hope in their futures and to not take life too seriously. I mean, I love B-rated old school horror and sci-fi movies. And look where that has gotten me! *throws a thumbs up* Embrace the glamour and glory of who you are and enjoy it.
