What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Sky Place?
Growing up in Belize, I’ve always been fascinated by the ancient Maya. Standing among the temples at Cahal Pech is a magical experience. I wanted to combine that history and magic into a modern tale set in beautiful Belize.
What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
Science fiction and fantasy. I love a good space opera. The Expanse by James S.A. Corey and The Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne are two of my favorite series. My novel, The Sky Place, is a contemporary and historical fantasy. Eventually, I plan to write in both genres.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
I just finished Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. It’s one of the best science fiction books I’ve ever read. I’m looking forward to reading Artemis next. I recently discovered fantasy author, E.J. Mellow. I enjoyed Song of the Forever Rains in The Mousai series, and Dance of a Burning Sea is next on my list.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
The opening scene. It took a massive amount of research to bring Ixchel to life, and my adventure began the moment she stepped onto her patio and looked up at the Great Star.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
For research, I prefer physical books to online resources.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
It is wise to be kind.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
People can change for the better and be redeemed.
