What can you tell us about your new release, The Assistant?
It’s a story you have to enter completely blind. It’s twisty, angsty, and … unexpected. The Assistant is one of the biggest mind f@cks you will ever read.
What or who inspired you to become an author?
It wasn’t a person or situation that inspired me to write. It was a feeling I’ve had inside me for as long as I can remember. I can only describe it as an urge and writing fills it.
What’s the best book you’ve ever read?
Little Bee by Chris Cleave.
Say you’re the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?
Stephen King would be my first guest. For someone who has been in the industry as long as him, I’m positive I have at least a million questions I want to ask him, LOL.
What’s your favorite thing about writing?
I love that there is no right or wrong answer. That’s the reason I struggle with math. In my world—in art—nothing has to equal.
What is a typical day like for you?
I tend to write really early in the morning until around lunch time or very late at night. Darkness helps and so does the quiet, even though I listen to music when I write. I spend at least half the day marketing, on social media, or doing administrative things. Two or three weeks before deadline, it’s typical to find me writing up to eighteen hours a day.
What scene in The Assistant was your favorite to write?
The epilogue was my favorite scene to write. It was the first scene of the book that came to me, and then the rest of the plot clicked into place.
Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?
It’s always darkest before the dawn.
