What can you tell us about your new release, Cry for Rain?
Cry for Rain is the true story of the soul-consuming, bitter childhood battles within a young girl’s home amidst Iran’s political and religious upheaval. As a Christian minority growing up in Tehran, Iran, Ariana and her siblings face harsh physical and emotional abuse from their unstable mother. On the other had, her love for her Papa leaves a yearning for his protection and next return from his trips as a truck driver. She holds onto hope, suffering through a bitter childhood, the loss of friends and family during the revolution, the regime change to an Islamic government, and a city embattled with Iraq. But most of all, Ariana struggles to survive her mother’s cruelty. This tangible, real-life story shows what it was like growing up in Iran, being an Armenian Christian within an Islamic government, and never having sanctuary or feeling safe…anywhere.
What or who inspired you to become an author?
I have always liked to write, and I believe that my own resolve and strength were my inspiration to tell my story.
What’s on your top 5 list for the best books you’ve ever read?
Wave, by Sonali Deraniyagala
Boston Girl, by Anita Diamant
Sailing Alone Around the Room, by Billy Collins
When God Winks, by Squire Rushnell
Poetry by Ahmad Shamlou
Say you’re the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?
I would interview J.K. Rowling. I would ask her the following:
- How long did it take to write your first book?
- How long did it take before your first book “took off?”
- What hurdles and rejections have you experienced as an author?
- What do you want your legacy to be?
What’s your favorite thing about writing?
I get to express my inner thoughts through metaphors and figurative language. Also, I can share my stories with readers and hopefully offer them hope and inspiration.
What is a typical day like for you?
Early mornings are spent with a cup of coffee, prayer, and quiet time with nature. I then follow the news, spend some time at the gym, and get ready for work. After a day at the salon, I return home, grab something to eat, and head up to my office to market my book.
What scene in Cry for Rain was your favorite to write?
I loved recalling the special moments with my papa, but one chapter in particular stands out: The Magnificent Sunrise. Writing about watching the sun rise over the horizon with Papa is a memory that will stay with me for the rest of my life.
Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?
After being diagnosed with thyroid cancer three months before this book’s release and undergoing a successful surgery and treatment, I am cancer-free today. My outlook on this journey of life is stronger and brighter than ever. I want to be an encouragement to those who have experienced hardships to let them know all hope is not lost, and choices do exist.
