Interview with Michelle Diener, Author of Ticket Out
14 Sep 2023
What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Ticket Out?
I’ve been thinking about this story for over a decade, a murder mystery series where the main protagonist was a traffic warden on the streets of London in the 1960s. It had been in my head for so long, but when I watched the television series ENDEAVOUR, about a young Inspector Morse, which is set in the 1960s, it inspired me to stop thinking about the books and write them.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Ticket Out, what would they be?
I listened to a lot of 1960s music while writing this book, to get me in the spirit of the era, so I’d choose These Boots Are Made For Walking by Nancy Sinatra for Gabriella, and for James Archer, I’d choose You Really Got Me by The Kinks.
What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
I love romantic thrillers, mysteries, as well as fantasy and sci-fi and yes, I write what I love to read.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
I’m going through a re-reading phase right now. When I’m deep into writing a new book, which I am at the moment, I tend to comfort read when I get a chance.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
I loved writing the scenes between Gabriella and her friend and neighbour, Mr. Rodney. Their relationship is so respectful and warm, it was a pleasure to put on the page.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
No, but I do get cabin fever quite often, pack up my things and go work in a coffee shop, just for a change of scenery.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
I try not to get caught up in too much on the extraneous stuff that comes with being a writer, and just concentrate on writing the next book.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
I’d love them to feel as if they know and like my main protagonist, Gabriella, and look forward to finding out what happens to her next.
