Interview with P. Dangelico, author of Bulldozer

What can you tell us about your new release, Bulldozer?

I’m somewhat obsessed with flawed characters placed in real word situations. Watching them grow from the experiences I throw at them fascinates me. Amanda Shaw, the heroine of Bulldozer, is very much a flawed character. She’s a woman who has faced her addiction and conquered it and now that her life is finally running smoothly she stumbles into love.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

Nora Ephron and Nancy Myers, two women working in the very male dominated film industry that wrote and still write, in the case of Nancy Myers, real world stories about women.

What’s on your top 5 list for the best books you’ve ever read?

Top five books…this is the toughest question. I have very eclectic taste so I would have to say. The Reader by Bernhard Schlink. Pride and Prejudice Jane Austen. The Star and the Shadow by Laura Kinsale. Watership Down by Richard Adams. Catch 22 by Joseph Heller.

Say you’re the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

My first guest would be God. The question would be, why?

What’s your favorite thing about writing?

My favorite thing about writing is hearing the characters come to life in my head. They’re dying to tell me their stories. Sometime I feel like Whoopi Goldberg in the movie Ghost. The voices never stop and I’m grateful for that.

What is a typical day like for you?

I’m not an early riser. I often work/ write until 3 am. I wish I could get my brain working early, around 6 am as many of my author friends do, but it never happens. So I’m usually writing by 9:30. In late afternoon I check social media and answer emails and after dinner I write or outline until the wee hours.

What scene in Bulldozer was your favorite to write?

My favorite scene in Bulldozer is the meet-cute. The heroine walks into the house and finds the hero naked (with the exception of the little kid sunglasses he’s wearing) while he’s staring into refrigerator. She thinks he’s a squatter. It’s what started me on the road to writing these characters and is by far one of my favorite scenes ever.

Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?

I don’t really have a motto. Although I truly believe you can never edit too much. And don’t listen to the naysayers––EVER. If you love to write keep writing.
