Interview with P.G. Allison, Author of Tracy the Fire Witch

What can you tell us about your new release, Tracy the Fire Witch?

It’s a novella about a character I’ve created in the Missy the Werecat series. I thought I could use this story about how Tracy spends her spring break, dealing with terrorists over in Germany, to start a new series about Tracy. I hope to write future books focusing on her, outside of the adventures she has in the series about Missy.

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I’ve read lots of fantasy books about witches and werewolves and I really enjoy the genre but it always seems the focus is all about the supernaturals with their interactions with humans being almost non-existent, other than those humans who are “prey or food” (for vampires) or else those to hide from and avoid (for werewolves). Also, the werewolf books are all about the packs and the Alphas. What I wanted was a book where: “There is no pack, no pride of other werecats and no Alpha”. So … I decided to write one, just to see if I could. I thought trying to write such a fantasy might be fun … and, it was! I’m enjoying what I’ve created and it seems my readers seem to “get” what I’m doing and enjoy my books as well. Now, after seven books about Missy the Werecat, who is both a were and a witch, I thought I’d try a new series in the same world about her good witch friend Tracy, who is also a cadet at West Point.

What’s on your top 5 list for the best books you’ve ever read?

I have many favorites and love to read books in a series by great authors. I’ll mention just a few, showing some of what I like:

The Harry Potter Series by J. K. Rowling
The Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon
The Travis McGee Series by John D. MacDonald
The Psy-Changelings Series by Nalini Singh
The Mercedes Thompson Series by Patricia Briggs

And, here are some more authors whom I enjoy; I always read everything they write: Kelley Armstrong, David Baldacci, Jennifer Lynn Barnes, Lee Child, Sierra Dean, Jennifer Estep, John Grisham, Kim Harrison, Faith Hunter, Chloe Neill, Wayne Stinnett, Carrie Vaughn, Rachel Vincent and Eileen Wilks.

Say you’re the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

I would never be host of a talk show; I’d be terrible. I would have loved to interview John D. MacDonald but he passed away years ago. He was such a prolific writer and each of his stories really holds your interest. Crime, suspense, human interest, hard-boiled thrillers — he wrote so many things in so many ways. How did he do it?

What’s your favorite thing about writing?

Not knowing when I start writing things just where the story will end up going. As I try to work through each situation which my characters find themselves getting into, possible scenarios and dialog will evolve and the result will often go places I’d never dreamed of. Then, of course, I go back and rewrite and edit and rewrite some more, but the storyline has emerged and it’s fun to see just what has happened.

What is a typical day like for you?

Some days I’m able to write and some days I’m not. There are so many other things going on, so it always depends. Work, family, friends, try to stay fit, try to change what I can’t accept and accept what I can’t change. You know … life!

What scene in Tracy the Fire Witch was your favorite to write?

I love trying to include some humor. Those scenes usually include Tracy’s soulmate John and the banter between the two of them often provides opportunities for fun and frolic.
