Interview with R. M. Schultz, Author of Knights, Witches, and Murder
29 Dec 2021
What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Knights, Witches, and Murder?
Looking for something new. There are so many mysteries and thrillers out there. I wanted to incorporate a magical element and fantasy into those stories.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Knights, Witches, and Murder, what would they be?
I hear bagpipes, like in Braveheart.
What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
Thrillers/mysteries and fantasy. For decades I thought I loved epic fantasy the most, but while I realized my favorite books are epic fantasy I don’t love the meandering pace and 200,000+ words seen in many of those stories that copy the greats.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
Heretics of Dune. Blake Crouch books to get a feel for weird ideas for new books in this fantasy/mystery series.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
The finale where Calec confronts all of those he suspects.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
Trying to avoid my many rescue pets so I can concentrate, and then trying to seek them out when I am stuck.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
How murder mysteries could evolve with a touch of magic. I’m probably writing the next one.
