Interview with Stephanie Diaz, author of Evolution
16 Nov 2015
EVOLUTION is the third book in my YA sci-fi series, so it picks up right where REBELLION left off. An alien race has sent warships to the planet Kiel seeking total annihilation of its inhabitants, in revenge for an age-old quarrel with the Kielan government. Clementine and her crew of rebel friends must forge unexpected alliances and uncover the truth behind all the secrets they’ve been told in order to have a chance at surviving.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
When it comes to writing, “follow your gut” is the best advice I’ve been given. If a scene doesn’t sit quite right with me, usually something about it needs to change. I think the advice rings true in real life, too.
What books do you find yourself returning to again and again?
The Harry Potter series, of course. I’m also quite fond of His Dark Materials and Mary Shelley’s Merlin series, which begins with The Crystal Cave.
Say you’re the host of a talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?
It’s so hard to pick just one person! But I would love to interview J.K. Rowling and ask her how much the plot of the Harry Potter series shifted from her original idea over the course of the years she spent writing.
What makes your world go round? Why does it bring you joy?
People who make me laugh and books that make me feel exceptional things.
Who are your literary heroes?
Samwise Gamgee, Hermione Granger, and Lucy Pevensie, to name a few.
What’s your favorite quote or scene from EVOLUTION?
“‘I love you,’ I say. No matter what happens, no one can take that from me.”
Do you have a motto, quote or philosophy you live by?
Ad astra per aspera, which is Latin for “To the stars through difficulty.” It always gives me hope.
Stephanie Diaz is the author of the new book Evolution.
