What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Explosive Reprisals (Crime Scene Kosovo Book 3)?
I drew inspiration for Explosive Reprisals from the five years I spent working with an international organization in Kosovo. Living in this distinct, post-conflict environment with its complex mix of ethnic and religious identities, was a stark contrast to my life in New Zealand. The resilience of the Kosovar people after the conflict with Serbia deeply moved me and laid the foundation for my fictionalized Kosovo. In the novel, I created a fictional international organization to navigate the complexities of peacekeeping and law in Kosovo. While the setting reflects some real experiences, the characters are purely fictional. Kit Chase, a young New Zealand lawyer, arrives unprepared for the challenges ahead. Her impulsiveness and refusal to follow the rules often get her into trouble but also make her a sharp investigator. In Explosive Reprisals, Kit takes on her most dangerous case yet in book 3 of the series, unraveling a web of crime and corruption after a police officer’s murder. But beyond the action, the story also explores Kit’s personal journey toward empowerment—balancing her career, personal life, and financial independence as the lines between right and wrong blur.
If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Explosive Reprisals (Crime Scene Kosovo Book 3), what would they be?
Kit Chase’s theme song could be “Control” by Zoe Wees.
What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
Mystery thrillers. Yes 🙂
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
I’m diving into Secrets of the Lost Ledgers (The Glass Library) by C.J. Archer, where magic and mystery intertwine in a captivating narrative. Intrigue also takes center stage with The Vienna Connection by Dick Rosano, keeping me on the edge of my seat. I also love the setting in Vienna, Austria, where I lived for many years. For a shift in perspective, I’m exploring the metaphysical world in Reality Transurfing by Vadim Zeland, and for a lighter break, I’ve added The Accidental Dating Experiment by Lauren Blakely, a contemporary romance that brings humor and warmth.
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
One of my favorite scenes to write takes place in a Kosovo Orthodox monastery, where Kit Chase seeks enlightenment during a secret midnight ritual. The scene takes an unexpected turn when Kit uncovers a trafficking ring dealing in stolen cultural artifacts, forcing her to rely on both her intellect and inner strength to take down the criminals. I enjoyed writing this scene because it blends spirituality with action, allowing Kit to tap into a deeper part of herself while still doing what she does best — fighting crime.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
I write my best with a freshly brewed cup of oolong tea beside me. There’s something about the ritual of steeping the tea and the calming aroma that helps me settle into a creative flow.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
I often think of my father’s motto: persevero, meaning “persevere.” For me, it translates into, “I’m not a quitter.” That mindset gives me the strength to push forward, whether in my writing or in life, helping me stay focused on achieving my goals.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
My central message to readers is the power of self-belief and commitment. I hope readers will be inspired by the narrative to embrace their inner strength, recognizing that with perseverance, they can surmount any obstacle and realize their dreams. Life’s limitations are often the ones we impose on ourselves.
