Interview with Wes Dyson, Author of Myracles in the Void

31 May 2022

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Myracles in the Void?

I was going through a period of crippling anxiety, thinking I’d gone insane, and entirely isolated. I truly thought it was the end. And I was 23. But something deep down said I could unravel what was causing this. I had to. Over many years, I began to understand that starting very young I let every little failure define who I was, until nothing was possible, not even self-control. I’d conditioned myself for failure. Long story super-short, I wrote a book that metaphorizes what I learned.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Myracles in the Void, what would they be?

Maybe the “Bob the Builder” theme song?

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

Fantasy and Sci-Fi!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Next is “The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue” by V.E. Schwab.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I really enjoyed the more comedic scenes, especially between Gai and Kabbage.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

Well, sometimes I can’t find matching socks (actually, most of the time), and I have a superstition that that means its going to be an extra creative day, me and my different colored feet.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

Just keep going.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Being defined by a “destructive” moment from our past is something I think most people unfortunately carry. Myself included. A lot of times they occur when we’re young, which can make it seem like a built-in feature as we grow into it.

First and foremost, this story should be a fun adventure, with dazzling scenes, humor, and novelty abound. But if someone walks away feeling like they might be able to follow in Lynd’s footsteps, and realize trauma doesn’t define them, I’d humbly feel like my own trying journey to that conclusion has been worth it.
