Interview with Willow Mason, Author of At Your Fairy Worst

What can you tell us about your new release, At Your Fairy Worst?

This is the first book in a new paranormal mystery series, and features Kiera Walker—a fairy godmother born without wings. When she’s hired to investigate a murder by a dead policeman, she gets caught up in a whole lot of trouble—including getting turned by a vampire. (And that is strictly turned, not “turned-on” – it’s not that kind of book)

What or who inspired you to become an author?

I loved reading as a kid and began writing my own from about age eight. It got put on the backburner a lot, but when I turned forty, I came back to writing and haven’t looked back since.

What’s on your top 5 list for the best books you’ve ever read?

The Shape of Snakes, Minette Walters; The Cleaner, Paul Cleave; The Talisman, Stephen King & Peter Straub; Bridge Daughter, Jim Nelson; Triptych, Karin Slaughter.

Though, to be fair, I’d probably come up with a different list if you asked me tomorrow.

Say you’re the host of a literary talk show. Who would be your first guest? What would you want to ask?

IDK, another introvert maybe, so we can sit in silence while the audience gets a hefty dose of excruciating awkwardness. I’d prefer to pretend I’m not the host of a literary talk show. That sounds like a lot more fun.

What’s your favorite thing about writing?

Freedom. I get to make all the rules and put the words into everyone’s mouth and deliver all the quips I can never think of on the spot in real life.

What is a typical day like for you?

I get up after my partner has gone to work, and put on the washing, make a cup of tea, and stare into space for a couple of hours. If I’m feeling inspired, I write for an hour or two on my own, and if not, I join a discord group and sprint with other authors.

What scene from At Your Fairy Worst was your favorite to write?

I loved writing the scene where the main antagonist gave his reasons for doing all the bad stuff. His explanations are perfectly legitimate and defensible while at the same time being awful and life ruining—which is absolutely the most fun part because for a minute it seems like everyone could just nod and go, “Yeah, that seems fair. Carry on.”
