What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Ship?
In 2010 my mom passed away. She was the sun in the solar system of my family, and I really struggled with losing her. Writing about Sam, a woman dealing with sudden tragedy and her own unexpected response to it, helped me navigate that time.
What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?
Fantasy has always been my go-to genre. That’s usually what I write. This was the first sci-fi story I’ve ever written.
What books are on your TBR pile right now?
Awakening Sapphire by Jonathan Hawker; Fledgling by Octavia E. Butler
What scene in your book was your favorite to write?
Spoilers! 😀 There’s a scene at the end of the novel that was one of the first ones I wrote. I got a real kick out of it. Also, really any scene with Parker and Addy; I enjoyed their vibes.
Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)
Not sure if it’s quirky but I often like to write in longhand first. Mostly just to have some non-screen time. One of my cats, Harvey, usually snoozes next to me when I’m doing anything. Occasionally she offers suggestions.
Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?
When I get stuck on things, I try and think of it like a stalled car. You can be in the seat, all ready to go, but it won’t move if you don’t try and turn the key. Sometimes it might take a few times to get the engine to turn over. But nothing happens if you just sit there.
If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?
That the joy of loving someone is worth the pain of losing them. Don’t be afraid of making new connections.
